New land release at estate

By Adam Trombetta, The Weekly Times Messenger

The State Government is releasing land for the second stage of a 425-house development in Woodville West.

Stage two will add 81 townhouses, apartments and villas over the next 18 months.

All 69 houses built during stage one were sold last year and the development is now home to about 110 people.

About 800 residents will eventually move into The Square, off Todville St, near Frank Mitchell Reserve, when it is complete.

State Government agency Renewal SA is maintaining the $130 million project.

About 180 houses – most owned by Housing SA – were razed to make way for the development. The 13ha estate will include a cafe, parks and bike path.

Robbie Metz has secured a four-year apprenticeship after taking part in a training program to build a community garden at the estate.

Robbie, 18, of Cheltenham, was one of 23 students who achieved a certificate II in Horticulture as part of the program earlier this year.

Robbie said the training helped him land a job with the Spirit of Bonsai Garden nursery on Anzac Highway.

Robbie was six when he received a cochlear implant to assist him with his hearing but he has not let that stop him.

He uses sign language as his first language, and an interpreter from Interwork Limited helps him understand specific instructions.

“I enjoy landscaping plants and working with all the tools so I’m excited for this opportunity,” he said.

This Works Program is a partnership between Renewal SA, On The Run, Western Futures, Northern Futures Inc, Interskills and Skills for All.
